Our Inspiration: Iannis Xenakis
In deciding on its first project, NMAP
was strongly influenced and inspired by the composer and architect
Iannis Xenakis, who’s seminal work in both music and
architecture helped change approaches to composition, modern
art and design. As one of the first to articulate the value
of inter-disciplinarity, acknowledgement of Xenakis’
influence continues to grow.
A philosopher of sound and space, Xenakis created works in
both realms that reduced materials to fundamental
principles, a creative technique that emphasized the correspondence
of the two forms. His works are infused with
mathematical and scientific concepts, while his architectural
works reflect musical gestures.
soundaXis takes Xenakis’ explorations as its departure
point. By presenting his music, and through exhibitions,
discussions and papers of his architectural ideas, the festival
will celebrate his important contribution to 20th century
art practice. The themes embedded in Xenakis’ work –
the relationship of performance to venue – will be explored
through the music and artworks of other creators.
