CITY SPACE & SOUND
Goethe-Istitut - Toronto
This will be a screening of two films with live music performance.
'Birds on a Wire', a new film by Ellen Flanders, is a two-screen
projection accompanied by a live music performance (Jazz pianist
Marilyn Lerner). It is a five city symphony reflecting the
current angst and dislocation of a world in decline. Using
birds as a metaphor to connect these diverse cities, the film
also reflects moments of harmony that exist between chaos
and order bringing a ray of light into dis-ease. The cities
portrayed in this film are Toronto, Berlin, New York City,
London, Ramallah/ Jerusalem. 'Berlin: Symphony of a Great
City' is Walter Ruttman's 1927 photographic record of life
in Weimar, berlin and a timeles demonstration of the cinema's
ability to enthrall on a purely visceral level. It ofers
a kaleidoscopic view of a single day in the life of the bustling
metrolpolis. The screening will be presented with live musical
accompaniment by Marilyn Lerner (piano) and Lori Freedman
(clarinet).
The Canadian Music Centre
will exhibit architectural proposals for a future CMC building.
The CMC will also host a panel discussion of these proposals.
