MUSIC
of/in THE CITY
Institute for Contemporary Culture (ROM)
Life in the contemporary city is a constant bombardment of
the infernal din of cacophonous sounds as we become increasingly
dependent on aural stimulations and perceptions. Cinema is
the dominant media of both cultural expression and cultural
consumption. Popular music is omnipresent in the streets,
in the shops, in restaurants and bars, even in fitness centres.
It constitutes a textured field and is often an interpreted
as a sign of identity. But do we listen, and does music still
independently speak with eloquence to the challenges and sensibilities
posed by the urban condition? New cultural and performance
facilities are filled with old music, marvelous music rich
in tradition, but what then is the nature of contemporary
classical or serious music, the New
Music, compositions founded in the strategies and
discourse of current reflections and thoughts? Clearer understandings
of mathematics and the infusion of digital technologies and
electro-acoustics have broadened the scope for the composer
and the musician, adding to the possibilities of both voice
and instrument. What is the New Music and
how does it speak to a postmodern world? Panelists include
Jonathan Burston, Rodolphe El-Khoury, Peter Hatch, Ute Lehrer,
Diane Lewis and David Lieberman (moderator).

EXPLORING NEW PLACES FOR NEW MUSIC
Canadian League of Composers
A panel will bring together some of Canada’s innovative
presenters of new music together with representative Canadian
composers to explore issues arising from presenting new music
in unusual venues. The aim is to share experiences and
foster new ideas and perhaps inspire both composers and presenters
to think about the creation of music intended for community
outreach. This
event is designed to showcase the original activities of a
range of presenters and composers from across Canada seeking
to find new ways and new places to present music and to engage
the world around them.
